As best as I can interpret it, I feel like I am at the genesis of how to cope and proceed forward in a world after my wife’s death. Obviously, music has played an instrumental role on this front.
“BIRDS OF A FEATHER” has become the most consistent shoulder to rest my head upon. A dear friend of my wife expressed once how the song made her weep upon first listen. Many times, I’ve thought of this person’s expression of love and for brief moments, forgot even my own.
The brilliance of Billie Eilish could be described in many ways. But to me, her most profound connection is her ability to empathize across spectrums of lust, loneliness and love’s most dramatic instances. “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” is her latest addition to a catalog replete with the most tender human connections.
I instantly loved this song upon first listen, but the growth of connection I have with this song mirrors no other in 2024. Judging by all the streaming records she has racked up with this particular song, I know I’m not the only one so utterly moved it.
I’m so happy to name “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” my 2024 Song of the Year!!!
As I have said many times before, 2024 was an utterly fantastic year for music. Arguably, it’s been a historic year we might not see again in awhile.
From the heights of stardom of Billie Eilish to Taylor Swift, the just under-appreciated talent of Mannequin Pussy to English Teacher, and of course the remarkable Hidden Gems like Stargazing On Your Roof to Hannah Frances, my Top 100 is an attempt to reflect just how staggering this odyssey has been and just how remarkable music was in 2024.
As always, I am sad to see these songs fade from my constant repertoire. As 2025 unfolds and my constant focus turns to shaping New Music’s landscape, I know I’ll always have this stupidly long playlist to show just how much great fucking music there was in 2024!!!
Bye Now!!!!
