In making this playlist, I knew I wanted to start with Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology).”
For the longest time, this song was THE STANDARD of ecological awareness. I am a huge fan of protest music across genre lines. Whereas civil rights anthems and perceptive insights into systemic injustice are the most pronounced of the protest songs, there is this small sliver discussing ecological concerns.
This was perhaps my first attempt to really dig into the ecological protest concept. To my surprise, this concept was more prevalent than I thought. But more importantly, this concept dug across indie, folk, pop, metal and country.
There is a unifying principle across these songs and it shows the universal role music plays in human experience.
I hope y’all enjoy these songs as much as I have!
