The coronation of Sabrina Carpenter as the latest Pop Queen was the most notable aspect of August from a mainstream perspective. "Short n' Sweet" was exactly that and I thoroughly enjoyed how this year has played out for her.
But below the surface, there was just so much great music that came out. JPEG MAFIA, Magdalena Bay, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Parannoul are just some of the names who made a remarkable impression in what was a long 5-week New Music Friday month.
I think this month was also a revival of some great non-vocal works, which included everything from traditional piano compositions, experimental reed ensemble pieces, a quietly ambitious ambient soundscape and even RZA's wonderful "A Ballet Through Mud."
Easily, one of the best months for New Music in 2024.
I think the New Music World sort of dried up after a substantial, maybe even historic summer release season and the lingering impact of BRAT summer. But perhaps August will sort of restart the flame for the final 3 - 3 1/2 months until we're into the AOTY season.
Let's find some New Music in September!!!!
