Taylor Swift Takes Me To Midnights; Tove Lo Is The Ultimate ‘Dirt Femme’; Waxahatchee and Jess Williamson Has Me Loving Plains; and Jordaan Mason Has Us Remembering Daniel Johnston
By Joshua Gutierrez - Editor
So, Taylor Swift is the music industry.
With the release of “Midnights,” the mega star’s 10th album (if you’re not counting re-releases), I think there is no doubt about who is the most important or successful artist. After plastering the Billboard Charts with her name and breaking whatever crazy streaming statistic, it’s funny to say she is the music industry… but it’s kinda of true.
While I have to admit “Midnights” is not my favorite, nor can I argue against the critical marks given by many outlets and the community, it’s hard not to argue it’s overall cultural importance and personal relevance to so many.
While “Midnights” was my AOTM for 1Mil+ Listens, Tove Lo’s “Dirt Femme” was not close behind. The funny part of my recent fascination with the Swedish pop star is that I’m 6-7 years behind the rest of the world. Through private texts and within the IG comment sections, I learned how important this artist is and how many people already love her innovative work.
I have been very vocal about my love of Waxahatchee’s “Saint Cloud.” Alongside 2022’s EP for the Apple TV series “El Deafo,” Katie Crutchfield’s collaboration with Jess Williamson as Plains makes for a wonderful year. I count myself as a lifelong fan, so any project she creates has an instant love here.
Lastly, my Hidden Gem AOTM of “Rewrite The Words Again” by Jordaan Mason and Their Orchestra is a potential AOTY for that category. Understanding different perspectives through music has always been crucial to my own understandings of the world. With queer love at its forefront and a special reminiscent sound of Daniel Johnston, this album is truly special and already “the City We Loved In” could be a Top 10 song of 2022.
Thanks for anyone who is reading this and for all the clicks, shares and tiny bits of love for my Add-2-Queue blog.
